You know how people say “Better late than never”? I hope this is one of those times.
Today I’m sharing my summer capsule wardrobe; two weeks before summer officially ends. I know it’s probably not going to be as helpful since I’m sharing it so late in the season but I hope you still enjoy seeing it!
This season I’m trying a new method of sharing my capsule with you guys so please let me know what you think. For all my previous capsules, I’ve made a short YouTube video and embedded it into a blog post. In case you aren’t sure what I’m talking about, take a look at my spring capsule wardrobe post as an example.
That works, but I personally prefer the layout below because you can see everything together. I find it harder to visualize the capsule as a whole in video form because you can’t show everything at once. Let me know which format you prefer!
PLANNING: Confession time: I didn’t do any real planning for this capsule. My approach was quite relaxed because I’ve found that so far I haven’t needed to create more structure or rules in order to end up with a wearable, appropriately-sized capsule.
My main focus when building a capsule is to make the best use of what I already own. This keeps it budget-friendly and ensures that the focus isn’t on buying a new wardrobe. I do usually buy a few pieces each season, but they are more often supplemental (so I could have a perfectly good capsule without them) or they are a replacement for a well-loved, worn-out item. Most of my new items for this season I found secondhand and shared in this thrift haul.
I don’t count items until I’ve already decided on my capsule, but the total has always been in the thirties. My summer capsule has 33 pieces. I have this idea in my head that if I count my items as I go I won’t be as discerning or I’ll be tempted to buy more things just because I have space left. Is that nuts? Who knows! I haven’t tried it the other way.
If you have trouble keeping your capsule within a reasonable amount, counting as you go or creating a plan before you begin choosing pieces may be very helpful.
COLOR PALETTE: Something I had in mind for this summer was to incorporate more light colors into my wardrobe. I tend to wear a lot of black in every season, but I really wanted to brighten things up with some white, nude, and pale pink. Just the non-black shoe options made such in difference in my outfits! I also included various shades of blue and a few more multicolored pieces than normal.
That’s my Summer 2017 capsule! I’m very sorry that this is going up so late in the season. Work is still crazy but I’m determined to make time to share more about my fall capsule in the coming months.
